Medical Radiotherapy Equipment Cost-Down

Medical Radiotherapy Equipment Cost-Down

Customer: Global Radiotherapy OEM

Scope Summary:
Oxford Engineering partnered with a leading global radiotherapy equipment manufacturer on a strategic redesign initiative aimed at cost optimisation without compromising clinical integrity or regulatory compliance. Our Design for Manufacture (DfM) input focused on structural components supporting electromagnetic modules within advanced cancer treatment platforms. The scope included multi-material assemblies using CNC-machined aluminium, steel, and non-ferrous alloys, all designed to meet stringent IEC and ISO regulatory standards.

Candidate’s Performance Against Targets:

  • Led cross-functional design workshops that eliminated non-value-added features and reduced raw material consumption
  • Standardised tolerances across interface planes and introduced asymmetric geometries where functionally beneficial
  • Successfully validated regulatory-compliant rapid prototypes, accelerating development timelines
  • Achieved over 15% cost reduction through CNC cycle time improvements and simplified setups
  • Streamlined part architecture by removing non-critical aesthetic and structural elements

Support Against Functional Objectives:
Oxford Engineering’s DfM intervention preserved full compliance with international standards (IEC/ISO), while delivering tangible improvements across cost (15%), manufacturability, and reliability. The project yielded significant CNC time savings, reduced material waste, and enhanced product robustness through simplified assembly interfaces. Most importantly, all redesign efforts maintained the clinical performance standards vital to patient safety—ensuring that cost efficiency did not come at the expense of therapeutic effectiveness.
